Various refinements make a good thermostat reliable and noiseless. It should have a magnetic “make,” which means that the strip, once it gets near to completing the circuit, is snapped over into position by a small magnet, thus preventing sparking or arcing. The contacts should be of silver to prevent excessive wear, and there should be a condenser or capacitor to prevent radio interference. If it is not built into the instrument, it may be added afterwards quite easily; a suitable condenser is about 0.02 microfarad.

The thermostat is nearly always non-submersible and is clipped onto the side of the tank. It has a glass body, with the works inside it, and a control, which consists usually of a small adjustable screw with a non-conducting portion so that the operator can alter the setting of the bimetallic strip, and hence the temperature of the tank. Often a pilot light is present which indicates when the thermostat is operating.

There are more expensive models in which the thermostat proper is outside the tank, and a temperature “feeler” is placed in the tank like a submersible heater. Some combination models of thermostat- lus- heater are also available and seem to be satisfactory. However, they can be used only in a single tank and hence each combination must be repeated for every additional tank.

As we shall see in Chapter VII,the fact that the movements of the water in aeration are produced by air bubbles is usually of little consequence, and it is an example of get- ting the right result for the wrong reason. The old idea behind aeration was, of course, to increase the contact of air and water by sending fine bubbles coursing up through the tank. Unless a very brisk spray of very fine bubbles is used, however, the surface of water exposed to air in the bubbles is small and unimportant, and the movement caused at the tank surface is what matters.

Thus, we compute fish capacity from surface area, and we may modify this by including the effects of temperature, water movement, and various other factors. The warmer the water, the lower the solubility of oxygen, and thus the lower the fish capacity. The following estimates assume an average temperature of about 75�F. for tropicals and about 60�F. for cold-water fishes.

The number of infusoria needed per day can be dumped into the tank in two or more doses and will not overpopulate the tank while being eaten, as long as the fry are not extremely crowded. That is why drip feeding is rarely a must, but the dumping has to be done with reasonable foresight and careful checks on the condition of the tank. Watch the fry, see that they are eating, and estimate, even if only roughly, the proper amount of culture to feed.

Quite wide margins are tolerated and only normal care has to be taken, but some care is essential. Remember that not very much is needed at the start, but the rate at which the fry require food is always increasing as they grow and larger amounts must be supplied. From the start, therefore, it is perfectly feasible to raise fry with 2 feeds per day, morning and evening (but give them light to feed by). Occasionally a spawning may be lost because of a foul tank or unnoticed underfeeding, but the numbers of spawnings that can be copedwith by this simple scheme more than make up for this mishap. Any- way, spawnings are lost more frequently by older methods. There are certain advantages, too, in the infrequent feeding technique.

Although attention must be paid to the basic causes, such as overcrowding, gray cloudiness may often be temporarily corrected by brisk aeration or by the addition of disinfectants and anti- biotics. Another effective method with both gray and green cloudiness is to place one or two large fresh-water mussels in the tank for a few days. These will clear water when a filter will not.

Removal of Mulm

In the course of replacing some of the water at intervals of one or two weeks as recommended, it is easy to siphon off much of the mulm from the bottom of the tank. A convenient way to do this is to take a glass tube of 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter, slightly shorter than the aquarium depth if it is left straight, or a little longer if the top is given an angle bend, to prevent the rubber tubing which is attached to the glass tube from kinking. The business end of the glass tube should be softened by heat and then gently pressed onto a flat surface, holding the tube upright, so that the entrance is slightly constricted, to prevent pebbles, snails, and so forth, from getting into the tube and clogging it up. Any that do enter will be small enough to pass readily through the siphon. The rubber tubing should reach for 2 or 3 feet outside the tank below the water level, so as to give a convenient head of pressure.

The Cory dor as of various species (South American armored catfishes) breed fairly well in captivity, particularly C. aeneus and C. paleatus, or perhaps it is only that these have been most tried out. They lay eggs on plants, or on the glass, and do not harm either them or the young. The eggs hatch in 3 or 4 days, and the young like to disappear into a thick bed of humus or mulm. In C. paleatus, courtship is brief, with the male swimming over the female. Finally, with the male underneath, they take up a crossed position and the female swims up with 4 eggs clasped in her ventral fins.

These she deposits on leaf, and the process is repeated. It is not yet clear where the eggs are fertilized; some observers allege that the female takes sperm into her mouth and sprays it over the eggs, but others deny this. In C. aeneus, it is also said that the male spreads sperm on the glass, and that the female follows and lays her eggs. In Cory dor as the best stimulus to spawning is said to be a gradual overnight cooling from 85�F. down to 65�F.or even60�F.
